Painting!

Painting with 20 kids could be a teacher's worst nightmare; however, the kids did great.  They made tropical rainforest birds that tied into our Literacy story for the week.  The kids really love to paint!

Butterfly Metamorphosis

Today, we made an edible model of the complete metamorphosis of a butterfly.  Students represented the various stages including the egg, larva, pupa, and adult.  The kids loved eating it the best.  Also, if you hear your child humming insect songs at home that's great!  We have been singing songs to help us remember the parts of an insect, stages of a butterfly, etc.   Head, thorax, abdomen....it's an insect!

The butterflies have been set free!  Even though the kids were sad to let them go they were excited to see how happy they were when we took them out in the sun!

Check it out!

Located on the Newell website are a few new student projects we have been working on. Go to Student Projects on the left hand side, click on Second Grade, and Dudo.   Here is what is concluded:
1.  You will hear a podcast of a reader's theatre with pictures made using Media Blender
2.  A podcast of our class writing song we created for the entire school to help us cross the writing river.
3.  A sneak peak at the Author's Pages that will be included in your child's own book of all their writing they have wrote throughout second grade.

Enjoy!

Building 3-D Shapes

Monday, April 6, 2009

April 6th

This week we are still focusing on 3-D shapes in math. Students will be making 3-D shapes using straws.  What a wonderful hands on activity that allows them to construct and count the number of vertices, edges, and faces.

We are reading  a story about the rainforest and will do lots of extension activities that correlate with the rainforest.

Our butterflies are starting to hatch out of the chrysalis stage.  The kids love watching them go through the metamorphosis stage.

Remember no school on Friday!
